1.8 TDCI Engine malfunction, Traction Control Light and running rough. I was driving along at about 20mph and the car started running really rough, then seconds later the display showed 'Engine Malfunction' and the Traction Control light lit up. I turned it on and off again, got about 500m and it happened again. The engine malfunction message has come up on my 2008 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCI. There are no warning codes or lamps, so my mechanic has nothing to work with after plugging it in to the diagnostic scanner. Yet the message continues to come up, forcing the car into limp home mode. Tuning boxes differ in price and quality - from a £7 box with a resistor (theyve got them now with pictures showing the resistor that looks like a silicone chip!) to microproccesor digital adjustable - multi-map boxes costing £400- £500. Fuel filter for a start. Than check there's no air leaks into the fuel pipes. Since car are due for the cambelt and possible wet belt change how about looking at these as well. If fuel pump is bad symptoms would be no engine power uphill, cutouts while driving, whistling sound from the pump side. Quote. When you are either facing up or down hill, the car idles very rough and shakes the whole car. PkYg.
